Today was a good day...I swallowed down some bravery and read a poem. Out loud. To people.

I can't express how difficult it was for me. For those who know me, I'm a confident, brash, loud extrovert. But when it comes to reading my poetry I catch my breath.

Thank you Wolsey Writers for being so warm and kind. You made it so much easier.

For someone like me who has social anxiety, attending a public event always feels daunting.

I was pleasantly surprised - a warm welcome and no pressure. I also learnt a lot and met some fascinating people working on some fascinating creative writing projects.

So honoured to show my painting and poem in this exhibit.

Sometimes the joy is in the doing, rather than the result. Writing and painting these pieces was so therapeutic.

Trauma is completely unique. There is no one way to experience it, or one way to express it. So I have no doubt this exhibition will be powerful, personal and important.

The day raised questions for me. Such as...

👉 How do we define culture? And do we need to define it to appreciate its value?
👉 When people are struggling, how can creative health support their wellbeing?
👉 How do we support creative people through sustained funding?
👉 How do we make sure culture isn't a privilege of the few, but accessible to all?

This was the inaugural event for growing the Suffolk cultural strategy, so I look forward to seeing what's to come in the future.

We have never met

Or felt my touch.

In fact, you are a Stranger
In a strange land, just like me,
You are nothing to me, personally,
And yet...

You know
How it feels in the dark,
How slicing skin is a release,
How empty a smile can be.

Somehow, you know
How lonely 3am is,
How happiness dances just out of reach,
How hopeless Hope can seem.

I don't know why
I don't have an answer
But somehow you,
The Stranger,

Once, when we were young,
We hoped to be
so much.

To the world, and
Each other,
We held so many
Possibilities in the sky.

Once, when we were young,
We longed to see
so much.

There were no poor excuses,
No apologies,
No sorry to appease,

We were braver,
Then, when we
glowed.

The Good Old Days

Give me blood red lipstick,
Pearl earrings,
White cuffs against navy,
Give me a history I want.

Give me neck scarves of silk,
A brooch lined with fox fur,
Decadence, decay, drama
Darling, give me a look I can flaunt.

Give me the 50s, even the 40s,
Anything but this decade,
Give me mouths that love language,
A grace I don't own.

Give me hair pins and stockings,
Fresh gloves fit for a lady,
A splash of skin above the hemline,
Give me a time I can breathe in.

What does Borderline Personality Disorder look like?

May is #bpdawarenessmonth so I thought I'd share a bit about my own experiences of living with #bpd...

📣 My life involves fatigue, anxiety, panic attacks, self harm, suicidal ideation and depression. It also includes happiness, empathy, family, and support

📣 I may be smiling but I'm living with BPD every second of every hour

📣 My triggers can be anything from a smell that transports me to a different time to a delayed train

📣 I manage my symptoms by taking medication and having counselling when I need it

📣 I don't believe in recovery - I believe I've learnt to manage and get through each day, but there is no cure and that's ok

📣 When I'm good I'm fantastic, when I'm bad - I'm very, very bad

📣 Writing helps. It lets me empty my mind when it becomes too full of intrusive thoughts and suicidal ideation

📣 I've met a lot of people with BPD. No two are quite the same

📣 BPD is tough to live with but I am in awe of my brain for coping in the only way it knew how

Raven

It was a dream, that I was
the Raven,
Black, sleek, forgotten
among the eagles
of this world,

I dreamt my wings
would spread, glide, love
the air between each feather,
but it was just a dream.

Only in the hollows
of the night,
Am I the Raven,
so strong
my beak will break you,

Only in the twilight,
a tourist in my own dreams,
do I take on this noble form,
and peck
peck
peck.

In the dusty corners
of each shadow,
I crow, all-black, I crow,
I am Kutkh, I create,
as I blend into the mauled skies.

But it was a dream,
and as dawn finds my mind,
I am no longer a damned soul of Berlin,
or a murdered ghost,
wandering Stockholm,

I am just pecking,
sharply pecking,
at my very own skin.

This poem is taken from my poetry collection 'Vital', which was published in 2011.

I revisit this poem and the emotions I felt when writing it a lot, as I have the first line tattooed on my right arm.

I love the mythology surrounding ravens and believe they are good luck. Hope you enjoy the poem x

Raven

It was a dream, that I was
the Raven,

BRITTLE

I wish I could tell you I was different then,
that I was happy, content, just a child,
but even in early budding years
I knew something was brittle.

I wish I could tell you it's because of divorce,
or a trauma, a scene, a fight in between,
but even in the first dawns of my days
it was nothing but my mind.

I wish I could tell you, blame it on the parents,
put it down to that event, let it soak in the past,
but there is no reason behind me
I just am this way, I am brittle,

I was brittle before my first tooth,
before my first gaping hole nightmare,
before the first, small innocent cuts of youth,
I was brittle even in the womb.

I tried to soften my mind, with fairy liquids and
powdered promises, dusty stained hopes,
But it was brittle before life threw itself at me,
so I am liable to fracture when submitted to stress.

The Gambler

Let the chips fall as they may,
vows of silence,
now, then, shutters,

I can play, play, play,
Let these thoughts fall away,
and I will always be
the Gambler,

Alone, cheating
the decks, the dice,
I will play, play, play,
let the chips fall as they may.

As the Gambler
I am free,
free from ruin, rushing,
endless suffering,

I can make a vow
to myself,
this will be the last game,
the last throw,

I can honour that vow
in cold morning light,
but in the night,
in the night

my vows, they fade,
always assuming the worst
nonetheless.

I want to write of
Crows or doves,
Majestic or soft.

But it is gulls that cry
across my sky.

Fattened on scraps
Stout bills wailing
Right down to me.

Their unhinging jaws
Make me perfect prey. Pray.
I've seen the mob,
Preying on the weak. Praying.

God, that screeching
it's enough to make you
write of crows or doves.

Apt

The Great First Lines

I want to live in the great first lines,
I want to feel the power rush through me,
Go on, compare me to a summer's day,
Drink to me only with thine eyes,
I don't mind.

I want to bury myself in the great first lines,
I want to walk in beauty, like the night.
How do you love me? Go on, count the ways,
Come live with me and be my love,
I don't mind.

I want the great first lines written across my body,
I want my name wrote upon the sand,
I too, should like to rise and go,
For although the night is darkening round me,
I don't mind.

So many wondrous, great first lines,
which shall be mine?
Will I be caught in seasons of mist,
and mellow fruitlessness?
If so, I won't mind.

Will I be painted with a slash of blue,
or a sweep of grey?
Will I find my own scarlet patches along the way?
If so, I won't mind.

For I will have lived in the great first lines,
borrowed, maybe, but still all mine,
for I will breathe life into each note and line,
Until the stars burn out from ever gentle passing time.

Take off that coat, the white hurts my eyes.

As your back wins the audition,
And your eyes smile innocently.

Say it ain't so,
Shimmy, shimmy away from the director,
Let that mouth pout,
Let it swallow your doubt.

Nobody wants the truth.
Not really.

Just picture
the look on their faces if I declared,
bold as brass,
that I did this to myself.

Yes, honestly,
I made these incisions,
Up and down
My own tender arm,
It is a ladder,
of my truth.

Imagine, imagine,
The gasp in their mouths, stuck in their throats,
Should I confess
that only I
am responsible
for this criss-crossing map.

It leads to only my mind,
the one that is kept hidden beneath
each uttered 'I'm fine',
my mind that is shattered,
raging against this 'condition'.

What a polite word,
'condition',
for all the nights of terror
and each morning
I slide the edge against my skin,
just to let these bad humours out.

Honestly, the truth
is a dagger, a shaft,
it will pierce deeper
than you want it to,
it will reveal warm, black blood.

I promise,
You don’t want it, my loves.
